Clothes Don't Fit? Blame the Clothes, Not Your Body.

Here's an abbreviated version of a conversation I have all the time:⠀
Client: I 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 to lose weight because my clothes don't fit!⠀
Me: Why does your body need to change to fit the clothes? ⠀
Client: I don't know. I paid a lot for them. ⠀
Me: How long have you had these clothes? ⠀
Client: Years.⠀
Me: You've been working hard on your relationship with food. How would focusing on the scale benefit you at this point?⠀
Client: It would probably make me miserable. ⠀
Me: So, are your clothes more valuable than your relationship with food and your body? ⠀
Client: Definitely not! ⠀
Me: What should we do about this issue with the clothes? ⠀
Client: Find clothes that fit MY body. ⠀
Me: 😀 ⠀
Your clothes owe you nothing. You don't need to fit them, they need to fit YOU. Even if you've spent $$$$ on clothes you can no longer wear, you don't need to change in order to wear them again. If you've worn them more than 3-4 times, you've probably made a decent return on your investment. If not, consider selling/buying clothes on a resale site, such as Poshmark or donating them to a good cause. ⠀

If your body is still changing while you recover from an eating disorder, pregnancy or a history of dieting, don't buy a lot of clothes right now. Get a few essential items that you feel comfortable wearing and mix it up with accessories that make you feel good. Your body deserves nourishment and doesn't need to change to fit an arbitrary clothing size. ⠀
