A Diabetes Diagnosis is NOT a Carbohydrate Death Sentence

As a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES), I work with many clients with diabetes and pre-diabetes. Lately, I’ve seen an increased trend in clients becoming so fearful for their health that they turn to extreme restriction of carbohydrates. These clients are aware that carbohydrates turn into blood sugar during digestion and have decided that the best way to manage diabetes is to cut this important food group out. Many have actually been encouraged to do this by their clinicians.

Let me be clear: Contrary to what you may hear, diabetes does not call for the complete elimination of carbs!

Carbohydrates are a vital energy source and without enough, fatigue, brain fog, micronutrient deficiencies, digestive issues, low mood, and muscle wasting can result.

Our diet-dominated culture and well meaning, but misinformed health professionals may make blanket claims about carbs and blood sugar, but blood sugar management is much more complex.
