Is the way you view, categorize or talk about food negatively affecting you or those around you? I invite you to look over this list of negative food language. What comes up for you when you hear food described with words like “bad,” “toxic,” “clean,” or “unhealthy?” How does hearing food described with negative wording affect your eating experience? ⠀

You may be surprised to see the word “clean” on the negative list. When we view some food as clean, that may lead us to view other foods as dirty, wrong or not safe. Thus, using the word clean to describe food can have a negative effect on our relationship with food. ⠀

What about the 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 word list? How does hearing food described as fun, energizing, delicious and comforting make you feel? ⠀

Can you try these language shifts at your next meal? Or, if you’re with a companion who’s using negative food language, can you rephrase their wording?

The words we use about food affect all of us. I know I am able to more thoroughly enjoy my food when positive language is used.

I’d love to hear your thoughts!
